CANCELLED - Managing Dental Trauma in Paediatric Patients
This hands-on course is designed for Dentists, Oral Health Therapists and Dental Therapists.

Course Overview

During this one-day course, participants will gain knowledge and confidence in managing challenges associated with traumatic dental injuries in children. This course will provide information on behaviour management techniques involved in managing a traumatised child as well as their care givers. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to diagnose and manage traumatic dental injuries in primary and mixed dentitions.  

Course Topics

Behaviour management of child/caregivers at the time of unexpected traumatic dental injury 
Examination, classification, and diagnosis of TDIs in primary and mixed dentition 
Radiographic assessment and interpretation of TDIs in children 
Endodontic treatment after trauma in mixed dentition patients 
A review of paediatric dental trauma and treatment strategies: To splint or not to splint? 

Hands on exercises 

Practical demonstration and hands-on training on simulation models for management of trauma in primary teeth and young permanent teeth as given below  

Management of luxation injuries  
Management of tooth fractures 
Management of avulsion injuries 

 

Presenters biography

Dr Sobia Zafar
BDS, MSc, DClinDent (Paediatric Dentistry), PhD, FICD, FPFA, FDTFEd, SFHEA, MRACDS (Paediatric Dentistry)


Sobia is a specialist paediatric dentist and a Discipline Lead in Paediatric Dentistry at The University of Queensland. She attained her master’s degree from the University of the Western Cape (South Africa) and subsequently a DClinDent and a PhD degree from the University of Otago (New Zealand). She is the president of Australia and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry Qld branch. Her research and clinical interests are in the fields of dental education, digital dentistry, and the oral and dental health of children including those with special needs, and she is frequently an invited speaker nationally and internationally on these subjects. She has over 100 publications, comprising of full papers, book chapters and published abstracts, in both national and international peer-review journals. Sobia has successfully supervised 40 DMD/BDSc (Hons) research projects, and currently supervising MPhil, DClinDent and PhD candidates. She has also conducted multiple hands-on courses for the Australian Dental Association Qld branch and overseas. She recently received Teaching excellence Award from The University of Queensland based on her contribution to dental education.


Dr Christine Peters
DMD Endodontist.

Christine is Senior Lecturer in Endodontics at The University of Queensland School of Dentistry. Dr Peters received her degree in dentistry from the University of Heidelberg, Germany in 1992 and held a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry from 1992 till 1996. From 1997 till 2004, Dr Peters worked as Assistant Professor in the Division of Endodontics at University of Zurich Dental School, where she completed her postgraduate endodontic training.
 
In 2006, Christine became Associate Professor at the University of the Pacific Dental School, and subsequently in 2012 Professor of Endodontology. In 2020, Christine moved to Brisbane, Australia, and accepted a position as Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland School of Dentistry. Christine Peters has published textbook chapters and in peer-reviewed journals and lectured both nationally and internationally. She serves on the review panel of several endodontic journals, including the Journal of Endodontics and the International Endodontic Journal. Christine is a member of OKU, past president of the Northern California Academy of Endodontics and secretary and board member of the Australian Society of Endodontics, Queensland Branch.
