This course is designed for all dental practitioners, including dentists, oral health therapists and hygienists.

Course OVERVIEW

Ever wondered what instruments periodontists use to clean teeth? How to hold them properly?

This afternoon is a course on the effective instrumentation of periodontal pockets.  The afternoon will start with a presentation on update on the pathogenesis of periodontitis and then move to the specifics of non-surgical management. 
There will be hands on session allowing participants to explore different instruments available for debridement, what to use when and where, and how to hold it. The hands on session will also include maintenance / sharpening of hand instruments.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, delegates will gain:

  • An update on the pathogenesis of periodontal disease
  • Understand the role of non-surgical treatment in the management of periodontal disease
  • Be familiar with the different hand instruments used for periodontal debridement

     

Presenters Biography

Dr Roderick Marshall 

Graduating BDSc (Hons) (UQ) in 1988, and MDSc (Perio) (UQ) in 1992, Rod was appointed senior registrar at Westmead Hospital. In 1995 he was made lecturer in periodontology at UQ and completed his FRACDS (Perio) in 2000. Appointed senior lecturer in 2001, Rod is a fellow of a number of international academies and has lectured across Australia and internationally. He has held executive positions for ASP, ANZAP, RACDS and IADR. In addition to teaching and authoring over 30 papers in the international literature, Rod now maintains a full time specialist practice in Brisbane and is an adjunct associate professor at the University of Queensland. 




 Dr Rachel Garraway

Rachel Garraway graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) in 1992. 
She worked in private practice in Toowoomba before returning to university to undertake specialist training in Periodontics. Rachel was awarded the Australian Periodontology Research Foundation prize for her publication on Periodontal Regeneration. In 1997 she travelled to London to accept a position in the Department of Periodontology at the Royal London Hospital. 
 
Dr Garraway is a Lecturer at the University of Queensland Dental School, and lectures extensively on dental implants and potential complications. She is a Speaker and Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, director of the ITI Brisbane North Study Club, a past President for ANZAP (Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists), a Member of the Board of Studies (Periodontics) for RACDS. and a member of the ADAQ CPD panel. 
 
Rachel is happily married with three teenage children and a dog. To escape the mayhem, she enjoys trail running and reading.
