Fibre Reinforced Composites in Daily Dental Practice

Fibre Reinforced Composites in Daily Dental Practice
This hands-on course is designed for Dentists.

Course Overview

Fibre reinforced restorative materials have a range of uses in restorative dentistry, and they enhance the options available for replacing missing teeth and strengthening weakened teeth.
Resin impregnated glass fibres provide an excellent option for cost effective and functional fibre reinforced adhesive bridges, while the newer short fibre reinforced composites (SFRC), due to their extremely high fracture toughness, provide an excellent option for reinforcing teeth. The SFRC are particularly effective for restoring badly broken down and endodontically treated teeth.
Fibre-reinforced bridges can be very successful in replacing missing anterior or posterior teeth, either as a interim solution or for longer term aesthetics and function. Bridges can be constructed directly in the mouth, fabricated chair-side or pre-made in the laboratory providing great flexibility in techniques available. The SRFC materials can be used as an adjunct to fibre -reinforced bridges or may be used directly as a core material for strengthening fragile and compromised teeth.
This course will provide clinical information and a ‘hands-on’ experience with resin-impregnated fibre reinforcing materials and SFRC combined with a range of aesthetic and high strength composite resins. Techniques for creating aesthetic and functional anterior bridges and for provision of high strength anterior and posterior restorations will be undertaken.  Materials handling and clinical hints and tips will be highlighted to assist in ensuring successful patient outcomes.

Topics include

  • Fibre reinforced composites – material types and indications for use
  • Case selection, treatment options and clinical techniques
  • Creating high strength, aesthetic and functional fibre reinforced composite resin bridges
  • Reinforcing endodontically treated, fragile, and compromised teeth
  • Multiple hands-on construction techniques
  • Longevity and maintenance of restorations

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understanding advantages and disadvantages of different resin reinforcing materials
  • Appreciate the importance of case selection and limitations of techniques
  • Develop skills in handling reinforcing fibres with different composite resin materials
  • Undertake construction of an anterior resin reinforced composite resin bridge
  • Undertake restoration of the endodontically treated anterior tooth and compromised posterior tooth
