Course Overview
The information session/lecture is designed to inform relevant personnel working in radiation practices of the operational framework for radiation compliance, a basic understanding of radiation and radiation safety and protection for staff, patients and the public.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will learn:
- What are ionising and non-ionising radiation
- Types of background radiation around us
- Biological effects & health effects of radiation
- Radiation dose limits (occupationally exposed persons & members of the public)
- Radiation hazards
- Radiation compliance across Australia (different in each state and territory)
- Working with radiation equipment
- Safe work practices and procedures
- Individual responsibilities in a radiation practice
- Case examples of radiation incidents and emergency
- Open floor for questions and answer
Presenter biographY
William Tan
B.Medical Eng, Grad Dip App Sci (Medical Physics), MACPSEM, MARPS, MAIP
William is a qualified medical physicist specialising in radiation safety for radiation facilities across Australia. He holds an extensive range of experience in all aspects of radiation and focuses exclusively on ensuring that all radiation practices comply with the relevant radiation laws, regulations, and standards.
William is accredited and qualified in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory to provide radiation safety and protection advice and to certify radiation apparatus and premises to the relevant safety standards. He is also an accredited and qualified Radiation Safety Officer across Australia and a full member of the Australasia College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM), the Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS) and the Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA).
William served as the Vice President of the ADIA for Queensland from 2018 to 2020. William is well respected in the radiation industry and has sat as a board member with the Queensland Radiation Health to review the state’s radiation safety standards.
