Course Overview

Diagnose - Treatment Plan - Best Practise
2 days of lectures from specialists in three surgical disciplines - Oral Surgery, Periodontic Surgery and Endodontic Surgery.
Includes two hands on sessions led by Assoc. Prof Ryan Lee for Periodontal Suturing and Dr Unni Krishnan for Endodontic Systems.

Friday Afternoon session dedicated to practice staff.

Presenter/s biography

Associate Professor Ryan SB Lee - KEYNOTE SPEAKER
BMSc. BDent. MCD (Perio), PhD

Ryan completed a Bachelor of Dentistry from the University of Sydney and his specialist training in Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious postgraduate dental education centres in Europe. Ryan was awarded a Master of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontology) with Distinction and a Certificate in Periodontology by the European Federation of Periodontology.

Upon his return from London, Ryan joined Griffith University, taking up a position of Lecturer in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. In 2017, Ryan moved to the University of Queensland as a Senior Lecturer in Periodontology and he has been recently appointed as a Discipline Lead & Director of Postgraduate Specialist Training Programme in Periodontology. Ryan combines the positions with his part time specialist periodontic practice at BCPI since 2013.
Ryan is conducting multiple pre-clinical and clinical research projects, collaborating with national and international universities and institutes. His main research interests are tissue regeneration, wound healing and diabetes. Ryan has published in high impact peer-reviewed international journals, and lectured nationally and internationally. Ryan is an executive member of professional societies (International Association of Dental Research and Australian Society of Periodontology). Ryan is a current President for Australian Society of Periodontics (ASP) and Editor-in-chief of Australian Journal of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry (AJPID). Ryan was awarded the André Schröder Research Prize (ITI) in 2022.

Dr John Webster
BSc BBusMan (Hons) MBBS BDSc (Hons) MPhil (Oral Cancer) FRACDS (OMS)

Dr John Webster is one of the most contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Australia and is passionate about providing minimally invasive, streamlined surgical solutions through the use of advanced digital technology at the Oral Facial & Implant Centre in Toowoomba.

He was born and raised in Toowoomba, completed advanced surgical training in Queensland, and his expertise and practice is focussed on oral and facial surgical procedures.

 

Dr Rob Hazlewood
BDSc (Hon.) MDSc (Endo) FRACDS MRACDS (Endo)

Dr Hazlewood has been working as a specialist endodontist since 1998, and a key member of the team at Endodontics Only since 2003.

Rob graduated as a general dentist in 1982, receiving a BDSc (Hon) degree from the University of Queensland, and returned to receive his MDSc (Endodontics) in 1998.

After graduation, Rob spent 15 years as a Dental Officer with the Australian Army, during which time he obtained a Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, where he continues to support the Australian Army as a Lieutenant Colonel Consultant. He has served as president of the Australian Society of Endodontology and has provided clinical mentoring and lectures for dental students at the University of Queensland.

Rob lives with his wife, Jessica, and their three children, and as a family, they enjoy getting in the outdoors by taking camping holidays and bushwalking.

Dr Barbara Woodhouse
MBBS, B.DSc(hons), M.DSc, FRACDS, FFDRCS (Irel), FRACDS (OMS)

Dr. Barbara Woodhouse graduated in dentistry from the University of Queensland in 1978 and worked for Queensland Health and in private practice – both in rural Queensland and in Brisbane – before deciding to specialise in oral and maxillofacial surgery.  After completing a Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, she returned to the University of Queensland to teach and to complete a Masters degree in oral and maxillofacial surgery in combination with a four-year surgical training program, initially at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.  To broaden her experience, Dr. Woodhouse completed her final year in a world class training facility in the United Kingdom and was admitted to Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

She was awarded a traveling Fellowship to Europe in recognition of the work she undertook in England. On her return to Australia, Dr. Woodhouse commenced private practice in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  At the same time she completed a medical degree through the University of Queensland and was awarded a specialist Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

She was appointed as a consultant at the Royal Brisbane Hospital from 1994 to 2009, where she pioneered several techniques not previously performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Queensland. She has also served as Lieutenant Colonel Consultant to the Australian Army, and has served on the national board of examiners for doctors applying for specialist registration in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She is a frequently invited speaker to medical and dental groups both in Australia and overseas.

Dr. Barbara Woodhouse frequently travels overseas to extend her skills and training and is the chair of Operation Interface, (an NGO affiliated with the International Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons) which supervises the supply of surgical expertise to Bangladesh, Cambodia Fiji, Tonga, PNG, Vietnam and Vanuatu and initiates and supports training programs for local surgeons in these areas

Dr. Woodhouse practices all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery but has a special interest in the correction of facial deformities.

Dr Unni Krishnan Pillai
BDS, MDS, MSc (Manchester), FRACDS, FRACDS(Endo)

Unni has been a specialist endodontist since 2001 and divides his time as a clinical educator and private practitioner. He is currently a tenured senior lecturer at the School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland and supervise post graduate endodontic trainees through his position as specialist endodontist with Queensland Health. He is an examiner for RACDS, a member of scientific advisory panel of Journal of Endodontics and the Senior Editor of Clinical Case Reports (Wiley). He has a special interest in cracked teeth and is currently pursuing his PhD with the School of Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering, University of Sydney on the “Biomechanics of cracked teeth”.

Apart from endodontics has three other special interest; people, beer and cricket. However, he feels the real joy of being alive comes during conversations with his 8-year-old son and listening to “lessons on life” lectures from his teenage daughter!

Dr Neil Savage
BDSc (Qld), MDSc (Qld), PhD (Qld), FICD, FFOP (RCPA)

Neil has recently retired from dentistry. 
 
When Neil was practising he covered all aspects of Oral Medicine. Special interests include Mucocutaneous Diseases and use of steroidal medications, soft tissue lesions both medical and surgical management and Orofacial Dysaesthesias.

He has held a long-term consultancy in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology at the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital and Oral Pathology histopathology reporting with QML Pathology Laboratories. As a long-term academic at the University of Queensland, he assumed responsibility for the disciplines of Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine at undergraduate and post-graduate specialist training levels.

Neil is a contributing author to two editions of Therapeutic Guidelines, Oral and Dental with a focus on steroidal medications. He is a foundation Fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia and Fellow of the Faculty of Oral Pathology with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.
