Course Overview

This is a theoretical course, aimed at improving practical skills. The aim is to assist the clinician looking to update their understanding of periodontal disease. This course will discuss the latest in treatment modalities, both surgical and non-surgical and some of the common aesthetic concerns faced. 

Periodontal disease is sometimes ignored, and often undertreated. This full day course will provide practical advice on how to incorporate periodontal treatment into general dental practice. This is aimed at recent graduates and those wanting to enhance their knowledge of periodontal disease along with their clinical skills. Learn how to communicate with your patients and when to refer. 

How Serious is this case?
Diagnosis and classification of periodontal disease.

But I DO clean my teeth!
An update on the risk factors associated with periodontal disease. Are some people more susceptible to periodontal disease than others and how do we identify those ‘at risk’

What Periodontal treatment works?
Non-surgical treatment of Periodontal Disease. What are the goals of treatment and how effective is non-surgical treatment? What does it involve and how do we communicate this with patients.

Do I need surgery?
Surgical treatment options. When is non-surgical treatment not enough? What are the latest surgical treatment philosophies and treatments. Is periodontal regeneration a reality?

Gingival Recession What causes recession?
Does it need to be fixed? How can we fix it? Learn about the latest in surgical techniques to address recession. 

Management of Furcation-involved teeth
Furcation involvement is one of the most detrimental factors affecting tooth survival rate. In this short presentation, we will discuss various strategies in the management of furcation-involved teeth.

Presenter biography

Dr Rachel Garraway
Rachel Garraway graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) in 1992. 

She worked in private practice in Toowoomba before returning to university to undertake specialist training in Periodontics. Rachel was awarded the Australian Periodontology Research Foundation prize for her publication on Periodontal Regeneration. In 1997 she travelled to London to accept a position in the Department of Periodontology at the Royal London Hospital. 
 
Dr Garraway is a Lecturer at the University of Queensland Dental School, and lectures extensively on dental implants and potential complications. She is a Speaker and Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, director of the ITI Brisbane North Study Club, a past President for ANZAP (Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists), a Member of the Board of Studies (Periodontics) for RACDS. and a member of the ADAQ CPD panel. 
 
Rachel is happily married with three teenage children and a dog. To escape the mayhem, she enjoys trail running and reading.
 

Dr Kaye Kendall

Dr. Kendall is a specialist Periodontist practicing in Brisbane.

Dr. Kendall graduated from dentistry at University of Western Australia in 1984 going on to practice as a general dentist until 1997. Kaye decided to continue her expertise by specialising, undertaking her training in Periodontics at the University of Queensland. She has lectured both undergraduate and postgraduates at the University of Queensland, been appointed as an external examiner in Periodontics in Australia and New Zealand whilst maintaining a private specialist practice in Periodontics and Dental Implants.

Involvement within the profession and a continuing of education is a priority to Dr. Kendall. Kaye is an active member of the Australian Society of Periodontology, ANZAP, Australian Osseointegration Society, the ADA (Australian Dental Association) and a member of ITI (International Team for Implantology) and a fellow at the International College of Dentists (FICD).

Dr. Kendall’s exceptional levels of client service, her authority as practitioner within the Australian field of Periodontics and her policies of empathy and discretion continue to cement her reputation.

Dr. Kendall for decades has aided her patients in their multitude of periodontal and implant concerns, with the common goal of maintaining your gums which frame a healthy and beautiful smile.

Dr. Kendall was recently elected as a Councillor for ADAQ - 2020.


Dr Marina Kamel

Dr Marina Kamel is a Brisbane-based periodontist at Westside Perio & Implants. She completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Distinction at Otago University in 2012. She obtained a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontics) and specialist training in implants at Sydney University in 2019. She is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS) in general practice and has membership (MRACDS) in Periodontics. Dr Kamel is the President of the Australian Society of Periodontology and Vice President of the Australasian Osseointegration Society in Queensland. Dr Kamel received multiple academic and research awards during her professional career. She received the FG Christensen medal for obtaining the highest ranking in the primary RACDS examinations in 2013. She has received the reputable Judith and Dr. Mario Adamo Implant Innovation Scholarship for her research work in 2018 as well as the Osteology Foundation Research Award for her research in 2020. 

Outside of periodontics, Marina enjoys running, swimming and tennis. She loves travelling and spending time with her family and friends in the great outdoors.


Dr Akila Vithanage
Dr. Akila is a local, he was born in Windsor, NSW. His love for work in healthcare led him to study Dentistry in Queensland to graduate with first-class honors.

Acknowledgement is given to the kind professors and staff who supported Dr. Akila at the University of Sydney (Westmead Hospital) & the University of Queensland (Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital). Currently Akila maintains his own private specialist practice in North Lakes & Toowoomba, and is a Consultant Specialist at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital. 

Dr. Akila is also appointed as a panel member by the minister of health to the Queensland Health Ombudsman and works with AHPRA as a specialist in assisting with dental negligence cases. 

Dr Peter Chen
Peter Chen graduated in 2007 from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours). He worked in community health centres and private practices in Melbourne for 5 years before undergoing specialist training in periodontics at Griffith University. Peter supervises post-graduate students at the University of Queensland, and previously supervised dental students at the University of Melbourne and Griffith University.

He is currently the President of the Australasian Osseointegration Society Queensland Branch and is a member of the Australian Society of Periodontology, International Team for Implantology, and the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontology.  Outside of periodontics, Peter spends time with his wife, Grace, and their young daughter, Ellie.
 

Dr Eugene Huang
Eugene completed his science degree with honors at the University of Queensland in 2003. He subsequently completed his dental and speciality training in the field of periodontology from Griffith University. 

Eugene has been involved in the teaching and clinical supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students.  He is also a Senior Lecturer at University of Queensland. He is a member of ASP (Australian Society of Periodontology), ANZAP (Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists) and ITI (International Team for Implantology).

Eugene has special interests in general periodontics, implant dentistry and the management of peri-implant disease.  

 
Dr Edward Ohlrich
Dr Edward Ohlrich obtained his Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours at the University of Queensland before gaining experience as a dental officer in the Australian Army. He completed a Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry, specialising in Periodontology in 2010. He was subsequently admitted to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the discipline of Periodontology. Dr Ohlrich has been a clinical instructor at the University of Otago and University of Queensland and has been an examiner at Griffith University.

Dr Ohlrich is a past President of the Australian Society of Periodontology, Queensland branch. He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists and the Australian Dental Association. Dr Ohlrich maintains full time private practice at EOPerio & Dental Implants in Aspley.
