Overview of Dental trauma and Hands-On splinting workshop

This hands-on course is designed for Dentists.

 Course OVERVIEW

This CPD course will enhance participants’ knowledge and clinical skills in the assessment and evidence-based management of dental trauma, including the application of appropriate splinting techniques.

This workshop consists of two sections:

Lecture
1 - Overview of Dental trauma 

  • Injury types and classification
  • Key points in examination and diagnosis
  • Prognosis and outcomes 

2 - Management of luxation and avulsion injuries – Current IADT splinting recommendations. Types of splints and applications

Practical
1 - Suggested trauma management kit.
2 - Repositioning of displaced teeth.
3 - Application of different splinting techniques.  

 

 learning objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Revision of key aspects of trauma examination, diagnosis and assessment.
  • Improved understanding of heading outcomes and prognosis following trauma.
  • Improved understanding the importance of splinting in different trauma scenarios and the factors that influence splinting decisions.
  • Be able to apply and remove different types of splint.
 

Presenter/s biography

Dr Bill Kahler

BDSc FRACDS MScDent DClinDent PhD MRACDS (Endo) FICD

Dr Kahler graduated from the University of Queensland dental school in 1983.

Bill practised in private care all around Australia for a number of years before training for a clinical doctorate in Endodontics.

He has an active interest in Endodontic research, publishing clinical research and case reports in dentistry, material science and engineering journals. He teaches and lectures locally and internationally, and acts as a reviewer for a number of leading dental journals.

Bill has received a number of Fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the International College of Dentists.

He has taught at the University of Adelaide and the University of Queensland, where he acted as Director of the Post-Graduate Programme. In addition to his private practice, Bill works at a specialist paediatric government clinic as an Endodontic Consultant. In his spare time, Bill enjoys relaxing with his family, travel, food and skiing.

 

 Dr Tom Fenelon

Dr. Tom Fenelon graduated as a general dentist in 2012 after completing his undergraduate degree with honours at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Following 5 years in general practice, he returned to undertake specialty training, graduating with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics from the University of Melbourne in 2021.  

Tom has worked in public and private practice in Brisbane, Melbourne and Hobart. He also continues to serve as a Dental Officer in the Australian Army and has recently been involved in clinical education at the University of Melbourne and University of Queensland. Tom is a member of the Australian Society of Endodontology, The Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists, The American Association of Endodontists and the Australian Dental Association. In caring for patients, he strives to articulate diagnosis and treatment needs in an easily understandable way and to provide a comfortable and relaxed environment for endodontic treatment. 

In his spare time, Tom enjoys a range of sports as well as camping and getting outdoors with his wife and kids.
