Course Overview
This course is designed for individuals who currently hold an extraoral license and want to progress to attaining a cone beam license with hands-on assistance in taking and interpreting cone beams. It is ideal for clinicians working in practices with an in house cone beam CT unit.
The course covers the essential theory including: the production and biological effects of radiation; limitations and applications of cone beam imaging; radiation dosages as well as the legal requirements in accordance with the Radiation Safety Act of Queensland.
The hands-on component includes supervised use of a cone beam CT unit including discussion of the recommended fields of view for different applications.
The cone beam licensing exam is then undertaken with results provided on the same day.
The second half of the course will cover sequential interpretation of cone beam datasets for serious pathology and will end with case discussions. Interpretation will include assessment of the jaws for odontogenic and non-odontogenic pathology. There will be discussion of the relevant anatomy and common pathology associated with the paranasal sinuses, upper cervical spine, airways and visible soft tissues of the neck and floor of mouth.
- Radiation theory including the production of x-rays and the biological effects of radiation.
- Cone beam theory including image acquisition, limitations, applications and radiation dosages
- Hands-on demonstration and supervision using a cone beam CT unit
- Cone beam examination
- Assessment of the jaws for odontogenic and non-odontogenic pathology
An overview of the relevant anatomy and common pathology associated with the paranasal sinuses, upper cervical spine, airways and visible soft tissues of the neck and floor of mouth.
Learning Objectives
- To provide an understanding of essential radiation theory
- To provide an understanding of cone beam theory required to safely operate a cone beam CT unit in Queensland
- To demonstrate how to operate a cone beam CT unit safely and provide supervised experience in taking cone beams
- To provide an opportunity to undertake the cone beam examination
- To provide an understanding of how to sequentially interpret datasets for serious pathology. Time will only allow for discussion of relevant anatomy and common pathology - more in-depth interpretation requires Specialist level training.
